The Effects of Emotional Repression

When an individual feels safe and relaxed, emotions can move freely through the body. During an emotional trauma (abuse, sudden job loss, divorce, etc.) or physical trauma (violence, car accident, serious physical injury, etc.) emotions may be repressed in the body as a means of allowing the individual to function during the traumatic experience.

The repression of emotions in the body during a trauma may later interfere with the free flow of emotions and may contribute to symptoms of depression, tension, anxiety, phobias, sleep disturbances, etc. Therapy techniques that facilitate the release of repressed emotions may help restore the individual to emotional balance and increased feelings of well-being.

Tapping combines gentle touch on acupressure points with focused attention on what's bothering you. This sends a calming signal to your amygdala (the brain's alarm center), reduces cortisol by up to 43%, and rewrites the emotional charge attached to stressful memories—a process called memory reconsolidation.

The Tapping Solution

Hypnosis can help you gain control over behaviors you'd like to change. It may help you cope better with anxiety or pain. Although you're more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you don't lose control over your behavior during a hypnosis session.
